Health Secretary Kathleen Sebelius Answers iVillage Questions
Last week the iVillage community reacted to a video produced by the White House on health care reform featuring the first lady, Michelle Obama It sparked nearly two hundred comments and questions. This week, Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius answered some of the most pressing questions you posed.
Here are some highlights from the video response.
1. On pre-existing conditions, Sebelius says, "One of the new features of new insurance marketplace is....insurance companies will no longer be able to eliminate folks based on a pre-existing condition; there will be a limit for how much they can charge for out-of-pocket costs." (Time on video: 8:55)
2. On concern about employers dropping coverage: "Employers will have to offer coverage or pay into a fund so that the employees can better afford to buy coverage on their own. Nothing in today's market prevents an employer from dropping coverage, unfortunately." (Time on video: 6:55)
3. On women's health issues like maternity leave: "Too many policies have no maternity coverage at all," replies Sebelius. "That has to change." (Time on video: 5:10)
4. On keeping quality doctors: "If they don't pass this bill," says Sebelius, "doctors who accept Medicare will be getting a 21 percent cut in pay--so they'll be dropping older patients. This will make sure that won't happen." (Time on video: 3:39)

I am not a supporter of any of the legislation on the table now. I think insurance needs to be opened across state lines and capitalism needs to be allowed to work. Government run health care is not the answer. It does not work well in any other country. Why would we think it would work here? All government agencies are slow to respond to their "customer's" needs, are inefficient and inspire mediocrity among their employees.
I say no way!
People who do not want goverment insurance need to wake up, medicare ,veterns, state and city plans, prisons, our goverment employees such as you, Workmens comp, Disability, and I know there aremore, I am so angry, all my life I have been self employed, and screwed!!!, My family and this country is a mess. and you can stay you dont support anything, I just pray tomorrow you wake up and find you have cancer and no insurance! an you have medical bills in the thousands, and the interest is growing and the judgements are on your home, and than your child developes diabetes and she is 3 yrs old. Welcome to my life. How dare you, You are benfiting from a non captialist system, you are in a system you are against, and you benfit, Why dont give it up?
I wish they would do something over psychiatrists. Most insurances only cover 50% of psychiatric bills, will this be covered and also, what about elective surgeries such as weight loss surgeries? So much that needs to be covered.
I already have what you would call "government" insurance" it is called medicaid. And try to find a doctor that wants to take a medicaid patient! With all the cut-backs they will not take on any new patients because they do not get paid properly. The government does not want to pay for their services. So in turn it makes it very difficult for the patient to get the care that they need. Those of you out there that think we are getting free handouts are wrong,it is not a simple as you think!
We all pay taxes all our lives. But when you need help it is very hard to get! Yes some thing does need to be done! But we already have too much government involved in too many things in our lives now! They would rather pay some one to see if fish get drunk, than to help a person who needs good health and well being.
The transcript is now available here.
I am an American Nurse. I now live in France. I have worked in many hospitals and even know a little bit about medical billing. It is scary. I have to disagree with anyone who says that government run health care does not work. It is working very well in France. Yes it is a big budget for the government. However because people have coverage, there are less visits to the emergency room which is one of the most expensive visits for health insurance companies. It is true that no system is perfect, and revisions are constantly being made. That is the nature of every industry, private or public. The important thing is that here in France, people are able to get the appropriate care when they need it. This is a human right. At one time or another those that prefer private healthcare, will have to deal with it's dark reality. Think long and hard on it.
Health Care for this country is needed now. Even the people that don't want the government to help give health coverage to most of americans will suffer very much in the future when their employers would not be able to afford to pay their health care and that will be catastrophic.
